The Benefits of Calf Foot Pump Socks

AchillesFixKit Socks: Everything You Need To Know

What are Foot Pump Socks?

Designed by a podiatrist with a special interest in blood flow from the legs during walking these socks apply calf pressure between 18-20mmHg. This offers the benefits of compression preventing lower leg, ankle and foot swelling, but does not interfere with the powerful calf muscle pump that is the main driver of blood out of the legs that occurs during walking and running. By gently grading the pressure to be less at the top of the socks, they do not cut into the skin as found with traditional compression hosiery. This prevents the socks from crushing the veins found just under the skin and blocking some free blood return from the legs.

Why Should I Wear Them?

Ideal for those with achy calves, and swelling ankles and feet when sitting, and for vein protection during long sitting, driving and flying. For those who work standing for long periods, they make perfect sense to wear and help reduce that irritating all day calf-ache. They also make a perfect alternative for those who use high compression hosiery (30-40mmHg) on days when you are going to be more active. They are so much easier to get on and off that traditional compression hosiery!

How do They Work?

The heart is a long way from the feet and for blood to return from the legs it faces an uphill struggle against gravity. In this process blood is assisted by a combination of valves and the action of muscles as they contract, squeezing blood between the one-directional opening valves. Your feet are also essential in this action because as they impact the ground on walking, blood is driven out of the foot. Let’s think of the foot and big muscles in the calf working like an extra heart to pump the blood.

When we sit for long periods, or if our veins don’t work quite as well as they once did, blood can pool in the feet and ankles making them swell. This is also true if your feet and legs get tired during long periods of exercise. In these circumstances, Calf Pump socks can be a great help in keeping foot and ankle swelling to a minimum.

Calf Pumps are medical-grade compression socks, with an extra twist to improve comfort and effectiveness of the compression on the veins. They feature pressure-free toe pockets that allow the muscles in the feet that run to the toes to help pump the blood out. This avoids the common problem of toe and nail irritation from the compression force of compression hosiery; by not restricting toe motion they enhance the muscles pumping activity. You can then freely wriggle your toes, even as you sit! They also feature graded lower leg pressures that prevent the compression effects gripping too tight at the top restricting free blood return up the leg.

These socks are great in helping reduce ankle swelling associated with long sitting, driving, flying, and long periods of static standing. They can also help in pregnancy when the veins are put under extra strain, and if you’re on the wrong side of 35 your veins generally stop working quite as well as they used to so that you notice a bit of foot and ankle swelling during the day. These socks can take the extra strain.

Benefits of the Socks included in the AchillesFixKit

When your Achilles tendon or calf muscles become injured, inflammation occurs which means it swells. Although chemicals within this swelling help to stimulate healing they also produce pain. If the tissues over swell, which is common, then the inflammation can delay healing and even cause the healing process to be less effective.

The AchillesFixKit compression socks help keep swelling to appropriate levels, keep the injured tissues warm while healing and reduce pain on exercise. This can be particularly helpful if you are returning to sport or another exercise after a calf or Achilles injury.
